Gum Disease 101
Gum disease (periodontal disease) is a chronic bacterial infection that is largely caused by poor oral hygiene. Plaque and tartar build-up on the teeth irritates the gums to the point where they begin to pull away from the teeth (gum recession). With receding gums, deep pockets begin to form between the gums and the teeth, allowing the infection to progress. Eventually, the gums can no longer support the teeth, and teeth and supporting bone are lost.

Aside from your oral health, the consequences of gum disease run much deeper than just your smile. The truth is, the mouth is the gateway to the body, and any bacterial infection in the mouth has a direct pathway to enter the bloodstream and wreak havoc on your internal organs and your overall health.
The oral-systemic link is strong and evident today, especially when it comes to gum disease. Gum disease has been proven to significantly increase your risk for over 50 other diseases including heart attack, stroke, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, depression, hypertension, and more.
