It’s now a month into summer and though vacations may be a bit different this year, it doesn’t mean our summer is a total bust. If you are traveling it’s still important to know the travel dental essentials!

When we’re on the road we can sometimes fail to adequately maintain our oral health. Luckily, there is an easy and effective way to stay on top of your oral health while on vacation. This summer, help you and your family keep their teeth sparkling clean with a dental travel kit.

Top 5 items for your summer dental travel kit:

Toothbrush and Travel Case

The most basic tool required for brushing your teeth is at the top of the list for your dental summer travel kit – a toothbrush. It’s best to opt for a toothbrush specifically for traveling instead of using your home toothbrush. Also consider a travel case instead of a plastic bag or another way of storing it. A travel case will allow for ventilation and we all know what can happen when an object is wet with no air (hint; it starts with M and rhymes with told).

Toothpaste

You can’t brush your teeth without the paste, therefore putting toothpaste in the top two on your travel list. Travel size toothpaste are convenient, especially if you’re not going away for a long period of time. Us dentists recommend fluoride toothpaste for adults, as fluoride helps strengthen tooth enamel and prevent decay.

Floss

When out traveling don’t forget your floss! Just because you’re on a summer vacation does not mean your teeth also get a vacation. You should still be flossing (and brushing) twice a day. Another tip is travel floss for if you’re at a gathering and have food stuck in your teeth. If not taken care of, food stuck in your teeth will lead to damaging bacteria that can cause tooth decay and infection.

Mouthwash

Mouthwash will come in handy when you’re on the road for a long period of time or flying and do not have time to brush your teeth. If you’re in the car or on a plane for more than 5 hours, it’s beneficial to use your mouthwash (carry-on size of course). Mouthwash will kill and eliminate all the germs and give you fresh breath!

Sugar Free Gum

Chewing gum in your travel kit may sound a bit off, but it actually has added benefits. For one, chewing gum can help the plugged ear feeling on an airplane. Gum also increases the production of saliva in your mouth that is essential for dissolved acids and fighting dry mouth. Ensure you pack sugar free gum with you to reduce the likelihood of tooth cavities.
